Determining Your Dosha Levels

So how do we find out what our current Dosha levels are and what they should be?

Our current Dosha levels (vikruti) can be determined by our current symptoms, dietary patterns, emotional patterns, and lifestyle habits, such as work, hobbies, and exercise routines. On the other hand, to determine our ideal Dosha levels (prakruti), we have to examine what our natural constitution of Doshas was at conception. To get a better idea of what this was, we use the lesser changing features of our bodies, such as physical features, voice patterns, and some long-term lifestyle patterns.

As each person is different, there is no set percentage of each Dosha that every person should have. Every individual’s ideal balance is different, and every individual’s current Dosha levels are constantly changing. Therefore, it is best to schedule a visit with an Ayurvedic practitioner to determine the best dietary and lifestyle recommendations for you at any specific time.

In an Ayurvedic consultation, your Ayurvedic practitioner will first gather information about your dietary and lifestyle habits, and may use tongue analysis and pulse analysis for supplemental information. The practitioner will then suggest dietary and lifestyle recommendations for you to incorporate to help bring your Doshas back to balance. This, in turn, may help reduce any symptoms you may be experiencing over time.

Usually, the longer one has had a sickness, disease, or symptom, the longer it may take to help the body undo the imbalance. It can take anywhere from three weeks to one year to see a difference in your body with an Ayurvedic program. Therefore, Ayurvedic health programs require patience and consistency, and follow-up appointments are necessary to adjust any recommendations according to the constant changes in your body. Follow-up appointments are scheduled every three weeks initially, and may be spread further apart over time.
